1932 Grill Shells, Inserts & Crankholes
Not wishing to hi-jack the other '32 grill thread with a very specific question, am interested in the variants of original grill inserts and crankholes.
Aside from the two insert construction types, namely the one piece outer and the two piece - there look to be a number of different crankhole types, although not immediately obvious the pictures attached show various differences. Would love to see any other types and hope these are of interest to others. Keith Last edited by Deuce-Addict; 03-04-2021 at 12:01 PM. |

Not at all; you always are a major contributor to expanding our knowledge of the variations in '32 Ford components.

Re: 1932 Grill Inserts & Crankholes
There is another other than what is pictured which is the stainless perimeter that is different.I don't have a pic but can attempt to make a drawing and post it if wanted.

How intriguing Sheldon, so the one piece stainless outer band has a step edge? Hard to photograph but my ones have a stainless edge much like the normal reproduction inserts as pics below. The grime between the bars and reflections in the stainless in my pics gives the appearance of a step but there isn't one, wraps around smoothly... |

Re: 1932 Grill Shells, Inserts & Crankholes
Robert,
On all that I've encountered, yes. I'm away from my junk at present, but my recollection of the several all-stainless steel inner perimeter ones that I have is that they are like Keith's and lack the indentation in Sheldon's sketch. |

Once again I err; I must have one given the photo below from the lower left hand corner of page 5-32 of the book.

Re: 1932 Grill Shells, Inserts & Crankholes
Robert - so interesting to see the variations, incredible how many there were for such a short production year. Below are the two types of stainless edge band that I have, is the stepped one like your old ones Sheldon?

Re: 1932 Grill Shells, Inserts & Crankholes
Yes Keith. The stepped one is just like the ones I had.One I found in France 30 yrs ago and the others in Calif years later. The one I found in France was missing the crank hole bezel and center bars missing also. The stainless outer was joined and welded behind where the crank hole bezel went.I sanded and polised the joint and installed repo bars(available then) and eliminated the crank hole bezel(which I did not have).

Thanks Sheldon. Reading David's book at the weekend, the ones like that with the step edge to the stainless are rare. |

One of my crank hole surrounds is not very contoured (for lack of a better term). Unfortunately out of the two, its just a wall hanger, to far rusted to try and resurrect. And sorry for the sideways pictures, I don;t know why the Spy Phone loads them that way??? |

Re: 1932 Grill Shells, Inserts & Crankholes
I've got a loose crankhole surround that is rusty steel. I always thought it was an old Argentina repro, but I see in Rockfla's pics that he has a chrome plated steel crankhole too. So, not all Ford crankholes were stainless?
