C.B. Radio/tour
Ok Guys, I'm planning on going on my first four this year! Some of the other members have c.b. Radios 📻 in their cars. I'm familiar with a c.b., but all the ones I have are large units that have been "pumped up"! I want to get a small normal radio for the Victoria. The car is 12 volt negative ground. Is there any interference from the distributor, or coil? Also, about the antenna, would you use a 4 ft fiberglass one mounted on rear bumper? I'm thinking a Cobra 🐍 brand radio. Any photos of you radio 📻 would be nice!

Re: C.B. Radio/tour
I love the CB radios for touring. We are currently trying to get more members in our club to start using them again.
I have a 5ft fiberglass antenna on the bumper and a cobra radio.

Re: C.B. Radio/tour
When we tour outback, we all have a CB in the car. I'm not sure you have the same brands we do but I use a Uniden with an aerial of about 600mm (2ft). Range is claimed to be 5 km (3 miles) but when conditions are just right, we have heard some of our fellow travellers over a couple of hundred Km. We tune to the same frequency the truck drivers use for obvious reasons.
One thing to remember when installing your CB is that if you have a tin can car like the Victoria and the aerial is mounted on the rear bumper, your range will be good to the rear of your car but lousy forward. The car shields the signal. I drive a Phaeton and mount the aerial on the top of the spare wheel so I have good transmission and reception range in all directions. Interference from the ignition system is not an issue.

Re: C.B. Radio/tour
I bought a set of walkie-talkies at Cabela's that have a 20 mile range and several channels to choose from for $30.00. They work fine around the house and property but I haven't tried them on a tour yet.

Re: C.B. Radio/tour
I use spiral wound core, ignition wire available from hot rod stores.
Seems to help the noise problem. JB

Range is pretty good... remember all are line of sight! Had held radios are inexpensive, charge easily or can use AA batteries in emergency and can be passed around to other folks on the tour. No whip antennas and since they are FM ignition noise is kept to a minimum. Our club has 4 of them just for tours and most of our members have their own. You can expect to play around 20-30 bucks per radio. We removed our CB radios years ago. Side benefit is since they are hand held you can keep in contact with others while shopping etc. Cell phones work well except often find yourself in dead zones while back in the country. Finding a 6 volt positive ground CB would be a challenge! Last edited by barkleydave; 02-29-2020 at 07:16 PM. |
