Default Thomas Head from Snyders

Has any one purchased a Thomas head from Snyders? I wanted to know your thoughts on it. Quality of the head, problems etc. The reason i am asking is i have a Winfield reproduction that is plagued with porosity problems, so i am throwing in the towel and looking for a replacement. Your thoughts are greatly apppreciated.

Dan sold the patterns for the Thomas to Don Snyder several years ago.

Hey shane,
Where did you purchase your Winfield (new/used?) and what comp ratio is it ? I ask, because all of the Winfield heads that I've owned, including current one, are without porosity ! However, I have seen OLD original used aluminum Winfield heads that had such problems.
Why don't you call Snyders and speak with Steve and ask him questions regarding heads that he sells, including type /cr /make. He is a very knowledgeable and friendly guy to deal with , IMO and experience !

I have a Winfield head bought from Reds Headers about 4 years ago .
I filled it with coolant only a few weeks ago and water oozed from a pinhole on the top of the head.
I ran a drill down it a little way and filled it with JB Weld which dried the same colour as the alloy when sanded smooth and so far appears to have worked although the engine hasn't been really tested yet and I just hope there aren't any other leaks that I can't see!

Maybe you could take it to an impreg shop.

Snyder's has Thomas heads to sell. I will not be making any new ones until those are all gone.

I have been running a Dan Price Thomas head for 16-17 years. Never had an issue with overheating or anything.

As far as I know, all the bad ones were set aside and sent back to the foundry for credit.

Thanks for the update Tod. If a guy were to buy one today from Snyders do you think it would be ok?

All I can say is that I personally set aside some castings and refused to machine them because they were questionable and others had visible holes in them. I can only speak to what was visible. I'm pretty sure Don had all the ones he kept sent to impregnation, so they should hold water.

Don told me the other day that he has already sold 15 or 16 of that batch.
