Big Congrats to You - Fine Effort! You've really done well with this project! I would get the timing set correctly - who knows where it is at the moment.

Retorque the head studs now - while it is cold. Usually, the later head bolts don't need as many heat/cool/retorque cycles as the earlier factory-style studs, nuts, washers and aluminum heads. Part of the reason is that a lot of the aftermarket hardware comes with washers that are too thin and too soft - so they deflect a bunch.

You really don't want to start it again and drive it without the retorque being done.

Now is also a good time to put a can of Moroso Ceramic Seal into the engine - before any anti-freeze is used. It doesn't matter when you do it - though sooner is better as far as sealing up any weeping bolts/studs.

Thanks Dale. I clicked send on the corny Hondelles video and went back down to the shop, then to a jobsite in the woodie. Just got back. Ok, will re-torque in the morning when it's cold.I ordered the moroso ceramic right after you suggested it, so it will be here soon. The whirring gear noise is almost completely gone now and the clutch is smoothing out. I know the low first is helping because I can just let it out without feathering. I had hoped to make a video today but ran outa time. With the gear noise much reduced, it just sounds better all the time and though 2 miles away is my longest trip, there is a tremendous difference in hill climbing power. Without a doubt, worth all the effort for both the engine and the T5.

Follow the directions to the letter on the Moroso stuff . . . then you'll drain it all out and put your normal water and anti-freeze in it.

I actually made a video today but when I watched it I could see I was nervous and there were errors and the driving part didn't come out right. When I previewed it upon completion the first thing that came outa my mouth was "Here we have a 59ab engine that replaced....) And I have no idea how to edit. All the videos on my channel that were made by me are one-takes. I mounted my tripod with the wooden phone holder to my passenger seat with a couple of bungees, but the bumps on my mountain driveway swung it out of view. I fixed that tonight, so let's 'hope for the best' tomorrow. Here's a couple photos of how I'm rolling these days. Please excuse the extension cord wiring, but it's free ( Today's contractors and sub contractors toss perfectly good extension cords in the trash when an end gets bad or they saw into the cord a bit). Sheesh, Ya'd think money grows on trees. Anyways it's color coded, jacketed and copper. When we pulled the front clip I just cut the extension cords that fed the front lighting. Been thinking of 3 prong extension cord replacement ends to reconnect them. I've collected a few of them over the years too

Thats such a cool truck! Can't wait for the first highway cruise on the mainland where you get to use all the gears.+ overdrive, + stroker power. Gonna be fun, carry on.

Oh, and I've been using extension cords out of the dumpster on my old job sites for decades... good stuff

Thanks Pete and Skip. Extension cords are the gift that keeps on giving. When run through a length of discarded garden hose down the frame rail they are darn near bulletproof.

I used to deliver styrofoam roof insulation all over New England…..I’ve gotten miles of broken extension cords from job sites. Along with buckets of nuts, bolts and screws. Even if I don’t have an immediate use for something, I can’t stand stuff getting thrown away and wasted….. like everybody else, I’m looking forward to our first ride!….Mark

Well I made another video today, but now I can't seem to get it from my phone onto my laptlop. I think that's how I have done it in the past. I don't do very much with my phone itself, but will do some research this evening. It's been a year since I added a video to my channel, but I should be able to figure it out again. IU's just in the shop and my property. Next will be on the county road, flying down the road and goin' through the all those gears! Maybe my son will be tha cameraman and then help me upload to youtube.

Gonna throw in the towel on this video. Been trying for two hours. I did get it uploaded but it was a small image in the middle of a black screen presented vertically even though it was shot horizontally. When I uploaded it to my channel 'garymtpickett' it went to an old abandoned channel I never use instead. Guess I will have to enlist my son for assistance. Very few things on earth more frustrating than a GD computer when you only sort of know what you are doing. It will happen..... Arrrrgh

Interesting day with the 276 today. I Re-torqued the heads today. I was half expecting they wouldn't move at all as the 67lbs seemed so tight and so definative. But no, the vast majority took a quarter turn to snug up to the 67. Knowing that thick copper sandwich gasket was squishing was a good feeling in the quest for zero leakage. So of course I can't just walk way after that, so I ran it down to the county road, zoomed around a bit til it was up to temp. Pulled back into the shop thinking it's time to time the ignition. Instead, my smooth idle turned to crap and nothing would get it back, I had black smoke and ROUGH running. I really didn't expect a carb to just change it's tune in an instant. I checked for a dead cylinder. Couldn't tell by shorting plugs. It was just to rough to hear. Pulled a plug. Total black soot. And another. All 8 black and sooty. Put in 8 clean but used ones. No Change. Tried the auto -lite big bore. Still very rough but a different kind of rough. Tried the no-port 59ab one from the 221 which was a nice rebuild by Vintage Carburetion. Best,smoothest idle ever. Instant acceleration just the best! But alas, no vac advance for sparkomatic. I had set the original 8ba carb on the bench. When I picked it up, big pool underneath so I'm thinking power valve? Makes sense. I may have some others around. I know about the radiused corner and this seemed ok. Maybe I'll fill the bowl and see it it drains out. Thinking it will. Would an earlier carb PV work in this ported model?

The PV valve was most likely old and the diaphragm probably rotted and/or failed - and it was not designed for our fuel today.

I would buy new power valves from Edelbrock or Daytona - that are designed for today's fuels.

I got to the botton of this thing. Seems the valve is ok. I used a Walker kit from a vendor at the Portland Swap Meet. Said ethanol resistant. Problem was the gasket I used. To stay away from the slightly radiused inside corner I used a fiber washer from the hardware store that had clearance in that area. When I got to the valve today, the washer had softened and the valve was now barely finger tight. That's why it idled nicely at first. I went back to the kit and there were a few to choose from so I used a countersink on one to clearance it a bit. Then reinstalled nice and tight. Purrs like a kitten. No smoke. Another crisis averted. Will I ever stop tryingvto vreinvent the wheel? Don't hold your breath.... And Yay! My Moroso ceramic sealer arrived today.
