15 years ago I bought this old Mopar from a friend here in the UK.....
The car came from Quebec. Shortly after selling the car to my friend the Canadian vendor (by a remarkable coincidence) happened to bump in to the original owners son who had in his possession the original order form, sales invoice and build sheet. Original owner's son gave it to the Canadian vendor who promised to pass it on to the UK owner. Guess what ? Monsieur....."it's yours for $1500" UK buyer wouldn't swallow that and passed the generous offer to me. I rejected it but offered him £20 for the postage to the UK. No deal..... 15 years go by and at the end of last year I asked Mr Canadian if he had any thoughts about the papers that rightly belonged to me and the car. He asked for my address......7 days later they arrived. Cost to me £20.....I paid the postage. Took him 15 years to determine right from wrong but I suppose now he sleeps at night. |

It may have been a running engine when it was taken out of the car.
And the painted up. And stored cold so it froze and cracked. I Have a 8BA that was stored under a tarp and a little rainwater leaked in, and it froze an cracked the pan rails. Anyway I never buy a flathead without the heads and pan off, or have agreed to return it if I find cracks or other bad stuff. Otherwise I pay partsmoney only. I know it to late for you but maybe some other can learn something. |

If there's any chance you're not going to eat the next night, if a deal goes bad, then don't sign up. Most of us have gotten stiffed at one time or another.
A few years ago I bought my '50 from an ad on Ebay. The deal was made after the auction was over (dumb). A friend and I traveled 400 miles to Monmouth, N.J. to look at the car in a diner parking lot. The car owner owned two diners in Monmouth. He had had a friend list the car for him as "no rust ever" along some other accolades. We crawled around the car with little view of the underside. When started, the "detailed" engine had a miss. I figured plug wire or plug and didn't give it much attention. Bottom line, I let my emotions take over my common sense and bought the car. After I got it home and put it on the lift I found fender repairs, quarters replaced and it still needs the body supports replaced. Disappointed, I put the car aside until this year when I had to move it to make room for my '37 project. I tried to start it to no avail. I took a compression check and had one cyl. at 70, the rest were 30-40 and two were 5-10 (?). Here's the good part; I had planned a trip to Maine to see Walt about an engine for the '37. After some discussion about the 276 Walt showed me a bone stock 8ba he had available. We struck a deal and now I'm back on track with the '50. Charlie NY has been another great help and supplies quality parts and service. There's more good people in this hobby than there is dirt bags. And, believe it or not, there's not always an opportunity to check things out as indicated above. Keep the faith!! Howard |

Bill , we have bought parts off you previously and found you to be an outstanding honest barner. You would expect someone else to treat you the same way .you were doing your usual thing by helping a buddy out and going to look at this motor. This guy obviously washed out the valley into the sump then polished a turd basically . It may have run briefly , but this is just a field motor.

This guy welds cracked blocks and heads everyday. Stop scrapping these blocks just due to cracks! |

I ran across an opportunity last month with a 59AB block (bare) was sold for $800. The block was cleaned cracks at the valve stem fixed and ready to machine. From this conversation I gather that block was overpriced, correct?
No it wasn't me that bought it. |

Despite a lot of top end cracks can be fixed, I think the consensus is that pan rail cracks are fatal.

My uncle used to tell me that a paint job has sold more junk than anything in the world.

What a nightmare! After buying my 38 I decided to try and find a decent flathead on Craigslist. I found a guy about 5 hours drive who had a 100hp 59 block that he had never started, but was supposedly rebuilt. I traded a VW sandrail that I had about $3500 into straight across. I was not aware of the possible myriad of potential problems my new flathead could have. Fortunately it has turned out to be a good motor, but things could have been so different. There are a lot of honest folks out there that aren't just out to burn the next novice that comes along. I hope you can recover from this bad experience and your friend can get his car on the road.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you can get around this with minor loss.
Cash already said "Go tell that long tongue liar (...) tell him that God's gonna cut you down (...)". It will get to him at some point. I'm a first buyer on the rack. I'm waiting to go and drive the car (47SD Coupe). They say it's a runner and I'll sure give it a good run before passing the money. |
