Sanded down the mating surfacing of the main body using 180 grit on a glass top. Got the top surface pretty good, but didn’t want to go too far on the bottom surface even though it was worse. Tough sanding the bottom surface with that “bump” in the way. Might try some of the copper gasket spray on those gaskets.

Installed the #48 jets and orig jet plugs. Had ordered new plugs, but decided to sand/polish the old ones instead. Did use the Teflon gaskets though that came with the rebuild kit.
Also installed the “plugged” power valve. |

Realized I do need that throttle linkage to actuate the accelerator pump. So, sanded off the braded over area with my mini pneumatic belt sander. Blasted and painted it. Painted some other small parts.

Was reviewing Charlie’s Holley 94 rebuild vids again, and he mentions that he prefers the latter style “clusters”, or tall clusters, over the original style clusters for secondary carbs. I have 4 pairs of clusters. Two of the original style abc two of the later style. However, I noticed there is a difference in the pairs of the later style clusters. One style has 3 vent holes on top, and the other has none. In his vid, he shows the later style with the holes in them. In the attached pics, the later styles are on the left and the original style is on the right.
Anyone know the significance of the difference on the later style clusters with the addition of those vent holes? |

Cleaned and installed the later style tall clusters, and they fit very tight and sloped towards each other. Didn’t look right, and had no idea how they were secured at the rear as I don’t seem to have any screws that would be long enough. I guess I should have taken some pics before disassembly. lol!
Decided to install the “original” style clusters which is what I have on the carb sitting on the engine. They fit very loose. |

Started looking next at the squirter. Of the three I can find, two are badly corroded, one with an actual hole in the passage. All three are blocked. Probably from the walnut shell. Having a hell of a time getting the one good one unblocked. Luckily, I have a micro-drill set, and managed to clear out the main passage, but the two smaller passages are going to be an issue. Will try soaking in some carb cleaner. Will likely call it a night for now.

I’ve decided to go ahead and media blast/clean/psint and the other carburetor parts. Was thinking about all the corrosion on the lower sealing surface of the main body I’m presently using. I’m worked I might have a problem sealing, so will try another main body in better condition.
I threw the carb together last night, and placed it on the manifold with the linkage. One linkage arm is too small to fit on the shaft and the other arm won’t tighten sufficiently on the shaft. Geeze! Also watched another YT vid, and now understand how the tall cluster “clamps” work and which style is used. It’s the one on the bottom (shortest) that fits above the squirter. So, might go and try them instead of the short/original clusters. |

Thought I should check out the idle mixture holes. One base was completely block. Used my micro-drill bits to clear the blockage and remove grime/dirt. Never did this on the base I used, so will have to go back and check.

The two bases are slightly different. One has a cap on the throttle shaft hole. The casting is also slightly different in that area. One is pretty badly pitted where the plates would seal. Might try some JB Weld to fill up the pitted areas, then sand down. Not sure if that’s a good, but check seal first with plates installed.

Sealed up the hole in the accelerator pump cavity. Did the same on another part. Not liking the idea of an opening to atmosphere (e.g. dirt/crap) getting in there. Someone mentioned what that hole was for in another one of my threads, but I forgot what they said.
Also so added some JB Weld to the sealing surface as it was pitted. We’ll see how that goes. lol! |

The other part with hole I sealed previously. Will sand down and blend in before paint.
This is becoming a whole assembly line type of thing. Haha! I would never make money rebuilding carbs. lol! |

This body looked almost new. Wasn’t really going to blast it, but there were a couple of areas that looked like they could use a cleaning. Once in the cabinet, I decided to do the whole thing. Good thing I did, as the bottom sealing surface is pitted pretty badly. Geeze! Looked perfect just like the top sealing surface. Will be adding some JB Weld to that surface now.

Had this complete body soaking in Varsol overnight. Will strip it down and see what’s what.

Had the squirters soaking overnight in Varsol as well. One squirter was fine in terms of being able to pass these micro-drills through the passages. The other was still blocked. One cleared out pretty quick, but the other was harder. Had to use a slightly smaller dia. bit, and just twisting it between my fingers, I was able to clear out the passages. Still cannot blow through them, so not sure if they’re still blocked. Will soak them for a bit in some warm vinegar to see what happens.
