Default Re: Mystery Ford Commercial Gray color paint!

Always thought my ‘32 AA was a Brewster green. Then after I got the above book, it most certainly is NOT Brewster green, but commercial gray. See pg 71 in the above book. Pg 71 is the picture with a single color stripe.

Commercial Grey was one of those colors that had eluded identification until the group producing the 4th edition of the MAFCA Paint & Finish Guide was able to find a truck that was painted this color. A part of the truck, that had never seen sunlight, was sent to a commercial facility where the color was analyzed and fine tuned by the team of experts that reviewed the color. The resulting effort was reproduced as the color sample in the new book.

On my late 28 79-A Panel Truck, the color used is Ford Tractor Gray - The color is close to white. The pictures make it look whiter.

At 10am, today 6.15.24, I got back from a $133 buy at Manlove auto parts at 117 E Market st Georgetown De 19947.

I showed my book to a sales rep there. Model A & AA ford paint & finish guide. 4th edition. I pointed to the color on pg 71, commercial gray, and took me into his paint ‘lab.’ He pulled out a paint analyzer, placed it on pg 71 paint sample.
Using the “EPB-Matrix Edge Premium Basecoat” paint creator, I was showed a number of closely matching paint samples. The colors had color code index numbers indicating how close they were to the one on pg 71. The lower, the better. Coming in at 1.56, the closest non-custom paint was
“VOL CARLSBERG MIDNIGHT GREEN. 0.22 pints
MXB-400 BASECOAT 76.1g
MT-281 BLACK. 25.5g
MT-315. BRIGHT. Y. 4.2g
MT- 270. PHTHALO. 3.3g
MT-370. WHITE. 1.9g

The paint I chose, shown in 2 of my pictures is as follows:
Coming in at 1.41 the closest custom paint was
1.00 quart
MXB-400 BASECOAT 675.4g
MT-281 BLACK. 194.6g
MT- 270. PHTHALO. 40.8g
MT-315. BRIGHT. Y. 36.1g
MT-271. GREEN 33.6g
MT-370. WHITE. 17.3g

Looking at the insides of the doors and the paint can lid compared to the sample, you’re close but I think it needs a little more black a little less green. If your happy paint away !
