I have had floats that did not float but the problem seemed to be related to years of sitting dry more than with the quality of the gas. The bad ones I have experienced appeared to have stopped being used years before alcohol.

I've tried several times to remove my fuel gauge over the last 20 years, without success. I tried both types of tools, with hammers, jacks, breaker bars, etc. Nothing works. I've actually seen the whole cowl deform from the force I've exerted on that steel wrench with a bottle jack and steel pipe (so at least I know it's a strong wrench). That gauge is there to stay.

I cant stress enough .... disconnect the battery!!!!
I rebuilt my gas gauge but found the repo parts didnt fit very well, in fact the chrome inner bezel would'nt screw in at all. Replaced the whole gauge with a new repo one, no problems. Oh yeah, and a neoprene float. |

Here's the brass float from Mikes. Its the only way to go, unless you are into the judging thing:

I just removed a brass float that drowned in a week I don`t think they are worth the extra money I have intalled a lot cork ones over the years and replaced ever durn one of them, I use the neoprene ones and I have had not one go bad.
