On the steering column there are two slots where the locking pin can drop through. One is about 5/8 " the other is about 1 1/4" long. Which one should face up to let the pin drop in?

Pin drops into the slot shown in the pic I posted above.

at either extreme of movement turn the steering wheel back and forth. You may be able to hear of feel where it is hitting. A mechanic's stethoscope would help.

I really doubt that the steering lock pin is the issue.

Pictures please

pin drops into that clot but on the column tube there are two different slots 180* apart. I can see clear down the column. Nothing there except when the pin is turned down?

problem solved. Long slot on steering column has to be up/ centered to allow full access of locking slot on steering shaft. Mine must have rotated. a bit one way or another. Steering wheel caught the slot on the steering column at 1 to 1 1/3 rotation of steering wheel. Stopped it from turning more either way. Hope my headache helps someone in the future and thanks to all who added insight about this. Ray (Rotator cup surgery sucks.)
