I double vote for Dan Brussgard's "steering bearing" kit. It is It is perfect and way better than anything else. If you are going to take the time to take apart a car with a horn rod, I recommend you treat yourself to the good solution.

I used Dan's kit in my '39 and it was perfect. At first turning the wheel did turn off the lights as JM mentions above....I thought it was the "kit" but I guess I bent the rod slightly because after a while it went away!!! I did this project as part of restoring the steering wheel and installing a new switch at the end of the rod
