What rear end do the cars use? Just recently 3.54 gearsets for the 48-50 trucks that use the Dana 41 have become available. All said and done it's not a cheap alternative, unless you can set up the gears yourself, but it may be cheaper than finding an OD trans and all the bits and pieces. Of course, a good used modern axle is even cheaper.

Assuming that with whatever change you make (transmission, gear change or overdrive ) you get 15% better gas mileage.(and that's a stretch)
At 87¢ a gallon. Divide that into what you expect to pay for the modifications. That should give you the number of gallons that you would have to burn before you get to the break even point. Something to think about.

It may not affect you Cheaterpete, but I heard a news snip it that Paris was banning older cars from being driven on the week days for air pollution reasons. That is some crazy stuff there. Surely there aren't too many de chevaux cars still running around or maybe some old Trabant 2-stroker cars from Eastern Europe?

Hey Pete, how are you doing? That body should be arriving soon I am thinking ....
While you are looking for an overdrive rear, here's a thought. Presently with your car at 2500 rpm you are doing about 56 mph. Now, if you could stuff a 32" diameter 16" tire like a 235/85-R16 at 2500 rpm you would be going 63 mph, at 2800 71 mph. A lot less rpm at greater speeds for the highways .... That's a fairly easy way to gain some rpm and stay in the 22-2800 rpm range where I usually run and is really a sweet rpm range for a flattie. The engine will love it and you will still have plenty of pep going up hills .... Just a thought ..... |
