I used the stock exhaust manifolds on my '47, and had a very good muffler shop make up the left side head pipe. If the manifolds have not been off the engine for a long time, it is likely one or more bolts will twist off and need some help to get them out, so you may not want to go the header route. As noted above, headers usually don't produce any noticeable power increase, and my duals sound as I expected with a pair of straight thru glass packs.
