What did you do today that was flathead V8 related?

Installed the military marker lights on the front fenders of my 42 Mercury US Army staff car. Removed the fender trim piece and used the center hole so didn't have to drill. Keeping trim pieces if someone down the road wants to put this car back stock. These lights were used to allow the vehicle to be seen by other vehicles in convoy or by civilians, not to illuminate the road, those were black out lights.

I just finished building two full conversion 12v negative ground generators. A '41-'47 style and a '48-'53 style. These are hybrids using new 12v armatures and field coils, and a mix of original and '55-'64 parts. It takes some modification to bring it all together, but they work beautifully. Im trying to get ready for the upcoming Charlotte Auto Fair in a few weeks

Installed distributor rebuilt by Charlie which included a coil upgrade by Skip Haney. Performance much improved.

Repaired my original 32 fuel tank by brazing some pinholes. Quite the job!

Removed Bubba beer can coil bracket and worm clamp and replace with F marked Ford GPW bracket I had on the shelf. Looks much better, but only one bolt hole lines up, so new correct bracket is on the list.

Over the last few days I replaced the king-pin bushings…repacked the wheel bearings and replaced the grease seals….added an updated steering kit….cleaned and adjusted the brakes….changed the oil and filter…..mounted and balanced 4 new tires….and made some doo-hickeys to make measuring the toe easier….

I finished up converting a 1933-1937 style V8 6v positive ground generstor to12v negative ground, 2-brush for use with a 1955-1964 Ford voltage regulator. I'll have this on display at the Charlotte Auto Fair 3-5 April. Red field BR 54-55.

Fabricated brackets and mounted military tail lights on my 42 Mercury staff car project. Replaced solinoid and removed radiator for cleaning and painting, all new hoses. Hub caps and trim rings removed, sand blasted and primed, ready for paint. Bumper guards removed, blasted, primed. Fan blade removed, blasted, primed and painted black. A lot of little things, but moving the project forward.

I disassembled the rear spring for my 1937. I plan to clean it up and have it powder coated. It is a nine leaf spring and if anyone has spare #3 leaf I might be interested. I had the spring repaired many years ago and the replacement leaf does not have the groove down the center to distribute the lubricant.

I took wood 2x4” & 2x6” wood dunnage from my Part Time Jobs Trailer Sales.
And made a couple o 8BA engine Randle’s to give to two friends.

This month I did a complete rebuild of the front brakes with rebuilt components from White Post in Virginia. Bled and adjusted all four wheels. Rewired the electric fuel pump. Six months ago rebuilt the starter and cleaned the mating surface of the starter and the block. It starts so fast now that it barely cranks! The last thing I did was replace the motor mounts. Got 45 years out of all these parts.. not bad!

It looks like the grease retainers are installed upside down on the backing plates to me.

That is one great car! When I was a teenager, I thought '40 DeLuxes were cool. Then I grew up and developed good taste and I now believe that the '39 DeLuxe is the ultimate expression of the era of Fords.

Trying to repair a broken door handle with JBWeld. One broken piece is glued back on. Waiting until tomorrow to glue the other piece back on.

Taking odds on this breaking on the first use.

Plan B is to try brazing it back together, as it appears that nobody makes a repo door handle for '36.

I repaired a similar break in a Corvette vent window handle about 20 years ago and expected it to break right away. It is still good. And no, it wasn't on the passenger side so it gets turned once in a while.

If brazing doesn't work, try something like "Muggy-Weld". I've had some successes with it, and some failures. I think it has to do with how well the alloys in the filler and base metal match.

If all else fails, place a "Wanted Ad" in the "Swap Meet" section. I'll bet there are a bunch of these out there in drawers, on shelves, etc.
