Rear spring question

I took the rear spring off of the rear end today and was wondering if the travel or spread of the spring is right. It measured 6" of release, wow that is a lot of tension, its a wonder the spring perches can take the pressure. Is that a normal amount of travel for the rear spring? Thanks, Tom
