Road trip in a 1929 phaeton
I'm doing it. NY Metro area to Boston in the 1929 Phaeton. I am leaving today and making lots of stops along the journey. If you happen to be a Model A guy/gal in route, let me know. If you have any advice for the ride or places to visit in route, let me know.
I also want to send a HUGE thank you to all the Ford Barners who helped me get the car into "drivable" condition. Via flatbed or 4 wheels, see you in Boston. -Seth |

Seth: Years ago (late '50's) when I was a USAF jet mechanic, I had a girlfriend near Newburg, NY (Stewart AFB) when I was stationed on Cape Cod (Otis AFB). My '30 coupe made the round trip many times! Mostly at night. Always made it! Still have the car, but not the girl. Keep us up to date as you travel. Gar Williams

Re: Road trip in a 1929 phaeton
To answer Paul's question, I have no idea which roads to take..... I figure I'll start on the highways and if it get a little too intense, jump to the back roads. My goal is to hopefully have the car end the trip in better shape than it started. I've packed the car, am checking fluids, and leave Rockland County NY at 10:30.
With this, I am stopping in White Plains NY, East Berlin CT, Hartford CT. I haven't decided if I want to camp out in Sturbridge or just drive the whole ride today. I'll post some photos and actually just set up a blog site..... www.oldcarroadtrip.wordpress.com. Feel free to check it out. Gar -- I know the Newburgh and Orange County well. You wouldn't believe what has been built up around the area. |

Re: Road trip in a 1929 phaeton
Seth, Good luck! You'll find the Mass. drivers are no worse than anywhere else. Boston is really a small town, you'll find things very interesting, parking can be a problem. They just turned the USS Constitution around in "Bahstin Hahbah" on the Fourth, an annual event here. I'm just north of Boston, in Danvers, next to Salem, Ma. where the Witch trials were. If found guilty of Witchcraft at your trial, (all were), you were sent to Danvers for your execution, by hanging or "pressing", using heavy flat stones on your body until you died. Most of us have gotten the Witch thing out of our system by now, so don't worry. Use a good, new map, there are plenty of back roads for you to use, many are paved over cow paths dating back prior to the Revolution.

Just outside of Boston, in Brookline is the Lars Anderson transportation museum. Always a great stop. They (museum) also have a web site where you can find which auto groups have shows planned on the estate grounds. We attended Transporterfest there for quite a few years in the late 90's. Shows are typically on Sundays.

The trip progresses slowly. I'll post about it later, but the car is overheating. I am going slow and will stop at Red's Model A Shop outside of hartford. I will probably stick around Hartford overnight if anyone wants to grab a beer. -Seth

Ok, I am staying overnight in East Berlin and heading back to Red's shop in the AM. I've updated my blog with some of the day's adventures and won't duplicate it all here. I'll definately go hit Lar's place in Brookline.

Re: Road trip in a 1929 phaeton
For those who have visited the blog I set up, you know that I made it to Boston with some AAA help. I can't speak well enough about my experience with Red Leiner and his shop. Here in Mass, I have spoken with and met Harold Samuels of the Minute Man Model A crew. He lead the charge to help me get some leads on shops that could help in Boston (and was great support when I had a little issue on the road). It is impressive how great the Model A family is... and it really is a family.
Monday AM I will drop off the radiator to one of the three shops reccomended in the Boston area to get it rodded out. Let's hope that this eliminates the overheating problem that I can't seem to resolve. I've posted a lot of photos on the blog for those who might want to see them. "Even when all the car’s gremlins start acting up and everything is going wrong, this car is fun and I keep reminding myself that the trip is also about finding these issues and resolving them."
So true!

Re: Road trip in a 1929 phaeton
Hope everything work out for you, and I am sure it will once you resolve the radiator. I am curious how far you had driven the car prior to the trip with no cooling issues? (Of course it has been really hot lately)
