Early V8 Transmission
I recently replaced a couple of gears in my '33 transmission, and now i"m confused about the whole assembly. Everything seems to fit and turn easily, but the shifting is all screwed up, and I have no neutral.
My transmission may be anything from 1933 to 1938, I can't tell. I have the Green Bible, but it is somewhat lacking in details. Can anyone steer me to a well-illustrated source of information on these assemblies? Thanks. Al |

Sound like you could use one of these: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...trans-book.htm

Re: Early V8 Transmission
Al see if you can find neutral with the cover off. It may be the shifting forks. G.M.

Re: Early V8 Transmission
You haven't by chance fitted the first/rev slider backwards?

George:
It worked nicely before, and I've done nothing with the upper assembly. I let my grandson take the car out on a date, and I'm thinking he might have tried to downshift at 40 mph. First gear teeth were all over the bottom. I bought several gears, reassembled the trans, and discovered I had installed the sliding gear backwards. Had all trhe speeds with the cover off, but the shifter forks did not match my assembly. Now I have that sliding gear correctly in place and I cant get neutral even on the bench with the top off. I'm sure I've made another goof on the assembly. But it's not my first........ |

I'm guessing that grandson didn't have a clue how it happened

Re: Early V8 Transmission
Al,
You need a copy of Van Pelts trans book! As to your immediate situation, I'd 'unscrew' the top(stick)from trans top. Take a good flashlight and a large long screw driver. Shine the light and use screw driver to bring BOTH gears back to neutral..so that both forks slide in easily.. |

Re: Early V8 Transmission
Al has ordered the book and should have it soon. From what he told me, there could be some "issues" with mis-matched gears in this trans, which is apparently not an actual 1933 tranny. So, he'll need to sort thru the parts he has and refer to my book to get a handle on this problem. I figure I'll hear from Al again soon.... I'm sure he appreciates the many suggestions, but he'll have to get things more figured out first.
