36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
Hello all , I have two regulators for by rear window of my 36 . They are both in good shape but I would like to keep the original one for my 3 window and I will put the other one in my 36 5 window I am selling . I cannot 100% identify the original one . Any help is appreciated . The first three pics I assume is the original and the second three ???

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
I can't help re positive id of the "original" one for your 3window, but it interested me that on my rhd 5window the square drive for the handle is on the other end of the unit. I guess it makes sense, but at the same time it meant extra tooling to make a unit that in essence could have been left as "one size fits all".

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
I don't think either will work in your 5 window or 3 window. They both have "longer" backing plates. 35 and early 36 had a 6 screw attachment to the door and late 36 have 8 screws. The earlier ones have the winder more towards the rear and later are more towards the front.
Sell your spares and buy the correct regulator. |

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
The top picture is a regulator for the rear door of a 35/6 4 door.
The bottom picture is a rear window regulator for a 35/6 roll down rear window.

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
This is very interesting . The top one pictured came out of the rear window of my 36 5 window and it worked perfectly .The 5 window is a restored car that was complete when I bought it . The bottom one is out of my 3 window which is a project car and the rear window assembly was together and working , but just hung in place to see what is what . Both regulators are the same physically . they just have some cosmetic differences .The top one has Terro or Ferro stamped in it and the bottom one has Dura stamped in it .I know that not all 5 windows had roll down rear windows . The book says some std cars had fixed rear windows . My 5 window looks like it may have started life as a std ? I wonder if someone installed a roll down window ? is that possible ? I don't see anything cut up or altered ? It looks the same as the 3 window which I know had a roll down rear window . I am just trying to keep the original parts if I have them and learn as I go . I can only keep the 3 window so I am swapping some parts between the two before I sell the 5 window . Thanks for the help .

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
According to the book , A std coupe with a trunk had a fixed rear window unless specially ordered from Ford ?? Sounds like yours was a special order , according to the book ?? Very cool

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
They both use the same parts, the difference is in the bend in the arms, you will notice on the regulator at the BOTTOM both arms have a slight bend inward where as the UPPER one the arms are straight. The second definition point, if you look at the LOWER unit ,you will notice that about 3/4" down from the roller pins the arms are bent to jog out ward, where on the lower picture they are just flat arms. THE LOWER UNIT IS THE REAR WINDOW REGULATOR, THE UPPER IS THE 4DR WINDOW REG.

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
If the 1936 and 1938 Hardware and Trim Supply Books are correct, then none of the regulators shown are correct. The H & T Supply Books show the crank mechanism on the left side of the mechanism, not the right side as shown above.

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
MIKE, I scrolled thru those pictures so much I'm dizzy, I clarified it I hope. Don, The regulators are just wound 180* out in the picture vs the picture in the trim book.

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
Looks to me they are both rear window regulators as they have a tapped hole in the
square shank to retain the handle; while door regulators have a pin hole crosswise through the square shank. The top one looks the most like the one out of my '35. Other rear window regulators I have had did have some slight differences in the arm configuration. And for our friend down under, the regulators are all upside down in the pictures. The handle is offset to the right side of the window. |

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
Duh!! Nothing wrong with me. I looked again & see that the stops indicate that the "window" is fully down in the pics, not fully up. I think I need counselling!!

Re: 36 Ford Rear window regulator identification help
Here's some images that I down loaded from the internet a while ago. They show the rear window mechanism in place. Notice that the crank handle is held in place by a center screw and not a pin like the side window cranks.
