Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
Hello,
How does the linkage for a ‘46 Ford come apart so I can replace the spring? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Conrad

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
Would it be possible to heat up the 90 degree bend next to the spring to cherry red and then straighten it just enough so you could release the spring and slide it over and around the bend and off the little ball end hook? You could also use a Dremel tool cut off wheel to cut the old spring into small pieces so it is easy to remove.
Let the metal air cool first. Then install the new spring and rebend the arm back to its original configuration without heating it up. PS: There's a linkage on Ebay and elsewhere that you could buy and use for experimentation. look here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/32552115226...Bk9SR_az-o6IZA and here: https://www.bing.com/search?q=1940+4...ANAB01&PC=HCTS Last edited by 19Fordy; 06-22-2024 at 12:25 PM. |

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
The spring will go over the crooked end of the linkage with some effort. Once the linkage is reinstalled, I place a string over the end of the spring to install it on the "rod".

That is one of the options I was considering if there's no way to gracefully take the assembly apart. I don't have an oxycilyne torch so I'll have to try with MAP gas one. Thanks.

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
Thanks, Kube. I'll follow your approach and report back. Regarding the string part, that's to "lock" the spring in place and create tension, correct?

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
You can get the spring off by twisting the spring around the bend. Put the straight section in a vise between layers of HDPE (#2 plastic) for protection, grab some gloves and a straight bladed screwdriver, if needed between the spring coil to assist, and work it around the bend.

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
Also turn the spring CCW such that the coils are opening up.

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
Yes. I have done many and never even thought to straighten the linkage.

Of course that was me working alone. Perhaps with help, it may be easy enough to do with the spring wound and installed.

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
Thanks, that explains. I can see how's easier putting the spring under tension after it is installed.

Re: Need help replacing Gas pedal linkage spring
You can use Mapp Gas as it produces a pretty hot flame. I just used my Mapp Gas to heat up a Stromberg base that had a frozen shaft in place. The base got almost as hot as my ox-acetylene would have.
