Default gearing question

I`ve converted a 53 Ford F100 with a 3 on the tree to a tremec five speed. It has a ford 9" rear end . What would be the best rear end ratio to run in this. The five speed gear ratio`s are 1st 2.95, 2nd 1.94,3rd 1.34,4th 1.00, 5th .63. Running an 8 ba flathead, stock. Thanks

The "best" ratio really depends on tire size, how you drive, and at what engine rpm. Two 9" ratios, however, work well with most OD trannys, 3:89 and 4:11. Do some math and it will make the choice much easier.

Also depends on how you will be driving it most of the time, in most cases I would go with the 4:11. The final drive in OD with the 3:89 would be 2:45 and with 4:11 it would be 2:59.

Hey, Thanks guys. I was thinking the 411 but I needed the opinion of a few guys on here.
It has a 2 something in it now and it`s not fun driving this way. You really have to ride the clutch just to get going. Now to find a 411 third member.

Here's a website that may be of some help to you. There is a formula here where you can plug in your gear ratio, tire size and overdrive ratio and it will spit out the rpm's you will be turning at any given highway speed. I found it very helpful on several occasions. Just click on "street performance calculators".

Codeplus, As Sidevalve 8BA recommended, that's the only site I've used ...... Not knowing which Tremec you have, they do offer a .82 overdrive for one....which would put you close to the Columbia ratio, with the other mentioned factors....I have this setup with my Flat Head...

[QUOTE=1 Not knowing which Tremec you have, they do offer a .82 overdrive for one......[/QUOTE]

The gear ratios were provided in post #1. The OD ratio is .63.

"1st 2.95, 2nd 1.94,3rd 1.34,4th 1.00, 5th .63"

These are the best ratios available on the T5s, they are the close ratio gearing which allows for the best shifting and for low rear axle ratios.
