Re: U joint housing
As Mitch stated, have you tried to slide the u-joint on the drive shaft splines? Try all 6 positions.

Re: U joint housing
Wouldn't the baffles missing cause internal end play and not force the output shaft rearwards?

Re: U joint housing
Mitch
I don't think that was the source although its a problem I'm sending him a pm if he wants to come down and get a case from me and we figure it out . I also Agee that he needs to make sure the u joint fits on the driveshaft well and all the way as well . It was obviously on but did it hit a burr or what? Larry |

Re: U joint housing
Pull the speedometer turtle off and see if the drive gear is
centered with the opening. Bob |

Re: U joint housing
From where your tape shows 1/2" come up the small bevel to where the true bell shape starts. That is where I measured from to the end of the shaft and got 1.326".

Re: U joint housing
The speedo gear does have some movement on the driveshaft as the turtle keeps it centered
So your measurements could be off |

Re: U joint housing
In your picture in #26 I don't see the wire ring retainer that should be laying on top of the part your tape is touching.
There is a groove for the wire ring to fit into. Do you see the groove? If not, then something isn't in place correctly. |

Re: U joint housing
No I can't see a groove. I have not taken the turtle off to determine where gear is, I will do that tomorrow. I can't move the gear back by pushing on it.

Re: U joint housing
Back at the beginning when Art wanted a trans case, I sold him one ready to go. He emailed some pics for which we discussed dimensions. The dimension on my rebuildable or riveted u-joints were the same as his. Likewise with the trans bearing retainer. Noting in the bell end of the torque tube that the speedo gear seemed close to the end, I measured one that I don't think has been taken apart and got one inch(to the transition of straight to the beginning of the bell). Also, couldn't see the snap ring which makes sense if his gear is 1/2 inch forward. Mentioned, he should check the speedo gear location through the oval hole for being on center, doubting it would have much being visible. I could not answer his question of how much tolerance for the end of the u-joint as it would take x-ray vision or a blueprint. Nevertheless, a half an inch tighter certainly could shove the u-joint into the trans. My suggestion was to pull the speedo gear, etc. out to see what is holding it in the forward position. My understanding is he bought the A or chassis with this done by a prior owner.

Re: U joint housing
Could someone have put the snap ring on the drive shaft & pushed the speedo gear on in FRONT of it??

Re: U joint housing
I was thinking the same thing as Bill so I went and measured a drive
gear and it was about one inch so I don't think that is the problem. Bob |

Re: U joint housing
I have a trans ready to go back in,from the end of the u joint to the bell is approx.15/16 of an inch, your u joint appears to be sticking out to far, drive shaft bottoming out, something not right in the trans, most likely.

Re: U joint housing
I'm getting the feeling the speedo gear is backwards and the clip is missing.

I just measured my U-joint to the flange of the bearing retainer and got 3 1/8" when I hold the U-joint slined output horizontal. Here is a picture of the rear of my spare tranny ready to bolt in. |

Re: U joint housing
Withe the help from you guys I knew what to look for. The speedometer gear was in backwards. With it installed correctly I it is about a half inch further on the driveshaft and I can now see the groove for the retaining ring. Attached is a picture of the gear as I was removing it. THANK YOU to all for the help.
