ruxtell rear end

Hi, Just joined Ford Barn and also just purchased a '27 roadster with a ruxtell rear end. I always understood that the ruxtell made the model T go faster. I now question that since I have read a few of the previous ruxtell comments. Does the Ruxtell just serve to get the car into a lower gear for going up hills in high gear or is it an overdrive unit? Thanks,

It is an under drive,used for climbing hills.

They are often used to make it go faster because a different crownwheel and pinion were often installed.

When I first got mine I used to shift it all the time but you do not have to, I find it nice in heavy traffic to use it.
Mine is a under drive and yes if there is a large hill I will use it.

It's an underdrive to give the car that much needed middle 2nd gear. Good for hill climbing but you can put a set of 3:1 high speed gears in it and that will give you higher top end.
I would only do it if the car is a roadster or touring not a heavier sedan.
