Anybody rope wrap their steering wheel to give their car that 1930s look?

Ahoy, matey, looking good! But when you're down at the Marina just remember:
"Right is Starboard, Left is Port!" |

I have done it some off topic vehicles (Jeeps). It takes lots of time and patience. I do not recommend using a regular coarse rope. I used paracord.

Paracord sounds good, how much would be needed?

Like this? This was done for my speedster. The stering wheel black was rubbing off and this was my answer to the problem. The cord is Jute cord from my wifes hobby cabinet. It took several hours to wrap. Then two coats of poly varnish. The cord tends to absorb sweat and oil and grease from your hands if not sealed with something.

Something I learned about sealing tape ( which would work with cords) is to install it from under the roll not off the top. Kind of like toilet paper rolls, not over the top from under, this keeps the tape/rope tight on the roll and tight to the object. Clear as mud I know

I went on Amazon and bought one of those covers the stretch over the wheel and then wrap with a plastic looking cord. It looks ok but I’m liking this look much better.

I used 4mm hemp bought off Amazon. The color matches my top.

It was a race car thing in the day. Great for a Speedster.
We have wheel covers today, so why not. |

I have Wheelskin leather covers on both my A's & love 'em. Had to use two per wheel as the diameter is too large for their kits, just sewed them together.

I used hemp rope from Amazon and it used about 110 feet of 4MM rope. Took about 1 1/2 hours to wrap the wheel.
