I finally got my transmission opened up and this is what I found, I cannot find any other damage that I can tell other than the teeth missing on the 1 gear. What would you due. would the transmission have to come out to repair this. And what would cause this Here is a link to my original post. http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/show.thread.php?t=178519 Thank you

You can take that gear out without taking out the transmission, but look close at the gear below it (cluster gear) --to take that out you have to take out the trans
you still have to take out the rear axle assembly to get 2nd sliding gear out |

For a "complete rebuild kit"...there is no specific just one "part number"...There are many parts related to a transmission for a "complete rebuild kit".
PLUS you need to know just what transmission you are working with to get the right parts associated with it as there were many changes over the years. Go to your favorite Model A store (Bratton's, Snyders, etc) and there you will see a list of all the parts associated with the transmission. ALSO...read the Ford Service Bulletins about repairing the transmission...In the initial description (March 1928) it tells you how...BUT BEWARE...There is a CORRECTION related to the March 1928 Bulletin in the April 1928 Bulletin that you must read so as not to screw it up. Also there are several other areas in the Bulletins that you should study. All in all...it is farily simple...If you know and understand your transmission and disasemble and assemble it correctly, it should last you a long time (as long as the reproduction parts are made correctly!). I would pull the tranny and work on the bench. The shaft for the cluster gear should be driven out the front of the case. There is a good chance you will also need some bearings and a cluster gear.

once again - -this is just my opinion.
You can't fix this without removing the transmission. You're going to have the rear end out anyway - -(and you should consider things like changing the axel seals - -you can only get to those by removing the trumpets) Usually damage like this doesn't happen just to one gear, there is almost always damage to the "other" gear, the cluster in this case. It's only 14 more bolts to remove (if memory serves), and you then have the tranny where you can totally disassemble it and replace the things you need to) The cause of this? - -who knows? - but once you get broken gear teeth floating around you can break everything, including the case. The bits get between the gears and something has to give, it's either another tooth, a bearing, or the case. Remove and disassemble the tranny. Look closely at each piece. Replace all the bearings. You need to take a good look at the shifter too - - Again, just my opinion -don't shoot me |
