I recall my weekly visits to Bel-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Illinois in the '50s and early '60s. Many of these cars ended up on this little dirt "bullring" thrashing it out for a couple bucks or a cheap throphy. Now THAT was motor racing at it's best but unfortunately...many of these cars met their fate there.

A friend of mine has a 38 cabriolet for sale on e-bay right now. It has a camper trailer included. They are painted to match. The only thing wrong is the sbc. It is a nice car.
There where two 37 ford coupes running around town when I was in High School. I loved them. One was in primer and the other was brown. The primer one had the sides of the hood removed so you could see the flathead. The other one had red wheels with white walls. |

I think that the guys, who chop the '37-9 models, MAKE them ugly. Even that black convertible has been "uglified".

I have to confess to not liking the 1937-38 Fords, in the past. Now, I really like them. I don't know what changed about them.
Some of the ugliest hot rods are modified '37-'38 models. They do not lend themselves to be modified, in my opinion. MIKE

I still have some 37-8 doodads left from that old restoration, canister-type oil filters, fuel pump stands, maybe a hood spear, doorhandles, headlight parts, 68-9350 fuel pumps (replaceable valves, high inlet-low outlet), an original convertible top boot, radiator winter shield, maybe other stuff too. Ahhhh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion the team that designed the 1938 Ford got as close to perfection in the Art Deco styling stakes as it is possible to get.
The modernist architect Mies Van de Rohe coined the term "Less is more" and this could be aptly applied to the '38' design. The coupe is more attractive than the sedan, the convertable also. My understanding of the term "Ugly Duckling" was it refered to the Club Coupe. Once such a moniker is used to descibe something, those with little imagination, or who want to parrot the latest 'Buzz Words' latch onto the idea, and then begin to refer to anything in the same year or class regardless of it's style, as "The Ugly Duckling". Time has proved the parrots wrong. |

I had a 38 two door while in school. It was my first flathead. I loved that car. I now have a 39 Standard two door. It runs good. I think the mechanical brakes on the 38 were just as good as the hydraulic brakes on the 39. I wanted a 39 deluxe but now I like the standard better. The standard look has grown on me.
