Marv, thanks for that info, What brand are they, Airtex? I haven't had a chance to send you one of the fuel pumps yet, do you still want to mess with it?

After messin' with the '39's I got the '51 F-1 washed and took it for a ride...

No Vic they are not Airtex. I am not a fan of them. I tried airtex on a late model and the gasahol melted their filter on the pump and ruined the pump and had to do the job over. Never again.

I will not use Airtex products. Made that mistake once.

Marv, that's good to know about the Airtex. I installed one on the '47 LC and it was working fine but, I really didn't keep the car here long enough to really test it.

Before I go the electric fuel pump route, I'm giving the manual OEM pumps one more shot. I bought the correct brass fittings for the fuel pump inlet & outlet as well as the carb inlet from Joblot so, they should fit correctly and create the proper seal to prevent gas from leaking out and air from getting in... We'll see. I'm also getting the flex fuel lines for both '39's from Bob Shewman. If problems with fuel delivery persist after I make these changes, I'll put electric fuel pumps in as the primary pumps and toss out the mechanical pumps...

I'm having that problem with running the car then let it sit about 15 min and have to crank over a few times to get it to run.Have an electric pump only and carbs are on a 1" spacer to get heat off the 97 just started this hard to start.Went and put non corn gas in and will try that.

While I was out of town, this past weekend, the correct fuel line fittings arrived from Joblot. Now I'm ordering the flex fuel lines for both '39's... I sure hope these changes make a positive advance. We'll see...

I installed the new correct fittings on the fuel pump in the '39 LZ and took her for a ride... Everything was going great, that is until she started to get up to normal temp. She started to buck a little, just like before only not as bad... I pulled over, opened the hood and could see droplets of water, yes, water (I tasted it) on the base of the carb. I have a spacer between the manifold and carb for the "Top Oiler", that replaced the factory spacer. The three threaded studs in the manifold (to mount the carb) are
original to the car. When I got home, and after she cooled down a bit, I removed the carb and the spacer to fine that the rear stud was loose. Upon closer inspection, I could see that the heli-coil that had been installed by someone in the cars past life, had given-way and was no longer holding... Now, I'm not ready to rebuild the V-12 just yet as she is a strong runner so, I'm not going to pull the intake to drill out the hole. Instead, I coated the stud with Loc-tite. I'll let is set up over night and see if it will hold when I reinstall the carb... I hope... Fun...Fun...Fun...

Drill it out to clean it up or just use some lacquer thinner or acetone. Fill the hole with J-B Weld & redrill & tap it.

Bob, at some point I will do that, it's just that right now, I don't want to pull the intake. etc. Call me lazy but... If the Loc-tite doesn't hold, I guess I'll have no choice...

In my continuing journey, (to return the Zephyr to the place she was before portions of the fuel delivery system malfunctioned), the serendipitous event that revealed the "loose" carb mounting stud , has proven to be fortuitous. My "quick fix" was to apply Loc-tite to the stud and reinstall it. I let it set-up overnight and put the carb back on this morning. I fired her up and, thankfully, everything appears to be functioning as it should. We are experiencing more liquid sunshine today so... I'll have to hold off taking a "test drive" until later today or tomorrow... But for now, the Zephyr is back... Now on to the '39 CS...

Time for a Test Drive

Ok, so I took the Zephyr out for a drive and everything was fine except for a few hiccups. I stopped in a gas station to take a look under the hood and I saw some tiny particles in the glass bowl (I know, it's not the correct pump for the '39 LZ ) on the fuel pump... That's when I remembered, I had taken the old fuel filter (back by the gas tank) off, and replaced the rubber fuel line. I didn't have another fuel filter in my stash so I just put the hose on and forgot... I drove on, to the auto parts store and asked for a 5/16's inlet/outlet fuel filter... I got the standard response... What car is it going in? I pointed out the door to the Zephyr and said "don't bother looking it up, just give me a 5/16's filter"... After a few minutes of searching the shelf, (out of sight, behind the counter), he reappeared with a filter. I drove the Zephyr home with no trouble so, once she cools off a bit, I'll put the filter in, clean out the fuel bowl and drop a shower curtain magnet in it to pick up any crud that might still be in the fuel line. I'll also pull the air horn off the carb and clean out the bowl.Hopefully this will be the final "fix" for the fuel system.

More Saturday Playtime.

We were back at it, playing with Flatheads today in my garage. Hurd, Mike, Don, Cliff, Al and Keith all came over. Mike had rebuilt Hurd's rear end for his '36 coupe.

Al showed up in a '70's built '34 Cabriolet, black tuck-n-roll inside and a 305 Bowtie under the hood... A real survivor.

We did some exploring on the '39 LZ because she quit running altogether on Friday... We found that one set of points had broken, and must have grounded... may have toasted the coil as well... Stuff happens... so, I'll be sending the distributor & coil to Bubba's on Monday so they can go through everything... Oh, I almost forgot to thank Hurd for the PIZZA

Hey Vic, had a great time at your house once again. Glad we found the problem in the `39 Lincoln. Hope Heard sp? gets a lot of miles and smiles with his fresh 3.54:1 rear axle. He has a really nice `36 3 window!

Hi Steve, Yes and no is the best answer I can give you right now. she fires up initially and runs fine until I shut it off... to get her to restart is a real pain... Mart has reworked one of my OEM style fuel pumps to be a "pass through" so, as soon as I get it, I'm installing an electric fuel pump... Hopefully that will remedy all the fuel delivery problems... If it does, I'll be doing the same conversion to the LZ.
