No. Modeleh, you were right the first time.

The starter pinion is "coming from behind" so to speak, trying to push the ring gear in the forward direction. If it sticks, it is on the back side of the ring gear teeth. The ring gear should be pulled forward, off of the pinion teeth.

If the pinion had made it to the forward side of the ring gear teeth, it wouldn't be stuck.
