Russ, this is a PITA task indeed. Believe it or not, I have found it easier to remove the right exhaust manifold and snake the pipe in from the top.
Sorry I can't offer an easy way. If there is one, it has eluded me. Fortunately, most of my cars I'd done full restorations upon. Very easy with no body on the frame

It's a pain but you can also remove the radiator to get the crossover pipe installed.
