Apparently Mr Musk wasn't the first one to send an automobile into space. In this clip they have already drawn the '37 ford pickup into the cargo bay with their tractor beam and are analyzing what they found.

I stand corrected. '36 grille, Denny's water pumps and one piece windshield. 1936. As for the tesla car, I'm gonna look it up. So it's an actual real thing out there?

Definitely a real thing. The roadster was launched Feb 6, 2018, aboard SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket.
