Default GM parts on EPAY

Anyone notice the abundance of GM junk listed under flathead ford and 32 ford on ebay. Guess they cannot get rid of their junk on proper descriptions so they bog down Ford listings.

Jim, similar things are happening all over eBay. I'm certain eBay expanded their search criteria to get more folks to view more items.
To me, and I'm guessing you as well, it causes more frustration. Enough to get a guy like me to stop looking.

Their algorithm is terrible and that combined with sellers listing with every keyword under the sun makes for lots of totally unrelated search results.

But; it is amazing how many of those parts "fit" my '35.

I don't even know my eBay or PayPal passwords anymore. Tired of everything fitting everything years ago.

E-bay is only there for the money. Every day I look on E-bay for Stromberg carburetors and what I find most is nothing Stromberg related. They obviously don't have anyone that is knowledgeable about what items that are listed. They just want the listing so that they can make money. It doesn't matter what someone is selling if they list the item in the Stromberg carburetor listing, or they say it fits whatever they want it to say.

I keep seeing the same listing for a broken brass hurd key for $1.99 I’m almost tempted to buy it just so I don’t have to look at it in my email alerts everyday. But at least it’s a Ford key! , and Yes, I keep seeing way more cool GM parts than Ford I’m starting to get jealous.

In a nutshell, eBay’s search engine “learns” from the adds being posted which includes the user categories and plain text included in the description. Therefore, when some sellers “overload” their descriptions by adding key words not related to their listing to drive traffic to their listing, such us “Chevy” , the search engine learns it. That’s how you end up with the wrong results. You can usually see this in listings at the very bottom of the description, usually preceded by a huge while space.

eBay allows to use operators to be more specific and filter out results. Here’s an example:

"1935 ford" -(ad, "muscle machines", caricature,postcard,hallmark, revell, ertl,diecast, die cast, postcard,advertising, revel,shirt, t-shirt,1:43, 1:18, 1:25, 1/32, 1/24,1/18,1/64,cast, monogram)

This is to search for 1935 ford and exclude everything between the parenthesis. The exclusion operator is the hyphen. Each term is separated by commas.

Not justifying eBay only conveying how their search engine works. There are more nuances to it.

As Conrad Rossi has noted.
Yes it takes time to set up a search as he explained.
But it works great.
Once you have a search set up you can save it in your eBay home page and go to your searches whenever you like without imputing all that info.

That’s correct, forgot to mention you can save it and set alerts which are sent to you via email.

I’m more than happy to write the search string for anyone if I’m given what you are searching for in plain English. E.g. “all ford transmission parts but synchros for 1951-1959 and exclude GM, Chevy, and Mopar”

...I don't know what the answer is but when you try to search for 1932 Ford parts, for example, and you usually have to go thru hundreds if not thousands of listings that have nothing to do with 32 Ford. Its frustrating and not worth my time anymore.

Did you read the entire thread? There is an explanation of how to do it, and "Conrad Rossi" has even volunteered to write you a sample search script.

These scripts can be saved and used over and over, either manually or automatically.

I fully agree. I haven't bought or sold anything on there for years as a matter of fact I deleted the link on my computer I never even look at that crap anymore. It is truly, a waste of time.

I didn't even know they were still around that is how much I think of that mess.

They are flooded with junk and fakes and imitation garbage wanting ridiculous prices.

While I agree that they are but a shadow of their former self, some good stuff still shows up. My use of it has changed over the years. I now have some pretty specific search scripts that will notify me if something interesting pops up, but seldom spend any time on it looking for random stuff.
