No spark to plugs

I jumpered the key switch and my car amp meter started registering.
not with starting but when i turn the lights on and off. Now the kicker, I removed the jumber and the ammeter is registering with lights and horn. Where is rod serling when you need him.

Maybe the car ammeter was stuck and jumping the leads freed it up

Now when I press the starter, the ammeter jiggles. I was told this jiggling is the points opening and closing? Is that true? Now maybe the problem is in the distributer itrself?
