The '48-'52 Ford trucks with the common 3" cast iron 1/2 bell had a rear sump oil pan with a threaded bracket on the lower rear of the sump. Two lower bolts connected the bell through the starter plate to this pan bracket.


The '49-'50 (and some '51) Mercurys with the 3" stamped steel 1/2 bell had the 3-stud bracket on the bottom of the rear sump pan that bolted to an angle bracket on the Merc starter plate.


Ford Motor must have felt more support was needed when using these 3" bells.
