Push button starter
I am adding a push button solenoid for the starter. One thing I have not seen in the forum, is where people mount the push button. I would like to mount it up under the dash panel somehow. But, I would like to see what others have done first.

Re: Push button starter
I suspended a small panel from the left side of the dash rail and mounted 3 switches in it. One bolt and an angle bracket is all that was needed, a hand built angle bracket about 3/4" wide and bent 90*. The panel was formed from a scrap of aluminum. Sorry, no pics.

X2 IMHO is preferable to have the push button on the floor. Leaves the hands free to operate the controls. |

Re: Push button starter
Leonard Nettles is doing a run of starter buttons designed to be mounted where the original starter rod came through the floorboards. They should be shipping soon.

Re: Push button starter
All right fellas. I hooked up the 6v solenoid. When I activate the solenoid, it just buzzes. But, there is button on the bottom of the solenoid that turns the engine over just fine when pressed. What did I do wrong?

I have a 6 volt solenoid in my stash that the small terminal has to be routed to ground (thru the button) to activate the solenoid. |

Re: Push button starter
I wired the negative battery terminal to the solenoid. Solenoid to the starter. Push Button is wired to the battery terminal on the solenoid, and to the S terminal on the solenoid.
I was testing the button without it being mounted to the car. Per your reply, I should mount the button so it is grounded? I can test that tomorrow. If I don't decide to start converting it to 12v. Damn thing barely turns over with 6v. |

Re: Push button starter
Check your ground connections and cable sizes. My starter feed cable turned out to be smaller diameter than #4 cable!

Re: Push button starter
Just my 2 cents- you replaced a simple and reliable, foolproof starter switch with a complicated jiggered up system that you can't get to work. Unless you're missing your right foot or something like that, why?

Re: Push button starter
This is the solenoid. It has three terminals. And has 6v stamped on the back.
Duralast Solenoid Switch F1490 I see that I do have a 2 gauge battery cable. I'll try swapping that out with 4 gauge. |

Re: Push button starter
That solenoid fits early Fords so the small terminal need to go to ground.

Re: Push button starter
Proper restoration eliminates the need for most modifications.
#2 gauge should be heavier wire than #4, why replace it unless it has internal problems Do a proper voltage drop test and find the real problem, 6 volts is not the problem |
