I believe many of the later '42's had a mix of painted parts, some mild steel some stainless steel, but all painted. I think it depends what the assembly line had on hand at the time. I've seen some cars with mixed side trim all painted to comply with directives to reduce bright work on vehicles during the end of civilian wartime production.
