What is the correct position on the squirt holes on the left and right side rods? I have rods with the same numbers from prior rebuilt I guess. Looked thru my books and been unable to find it.
Thanks in advance |

If you put the rod on the crankshaft with the number pointing towards the oil pan the squirt hole should be pointing up.

The stock Ford squirt holes are aimed toward the camshaft. Some rebuilt rods, such as Federal-Mogul, have modified squirt holes which can require some thought.

I think there are four facing front and four facing rear. That would give the camshaft the most amount of oil. None of my books makes it clear.
Thanks in advanve |

I don't know for sure about the 8BA, but Ford V8s following the flathead all had squirt holes that aimed the oil towards cylinders, not the cam. |

Seems to indicate that the purpose was for cylinder wall lube not cam lube.

It would be interesting to see in a lab environment where the squirts actually do squirt.
In a modern race engine they squirt at the bottom of the pistons for piston cooling. |

Yes and in modern race engines there are frequently special oil galleys and 'squirters' that are in place in the block to spray the oil where it needs to go . . . it isn't coming from the rods in most cases.

Lycoming uses piston squirts aimed at the inside of the skirts to cool pistons on the higher performance engines. They are mounted in the case assembly so they are fixed and feed from the oil feed bores. They have tiny little check valves in them so they control flow amount and shut off if pressure drops to much.
Ford put the little holes in the con rod big ends so they don't squirt too much and likely have lot of centrifugal force acting on them due to the motion of the rotating assembly. |

All very true but in the case of flathead Fords we have found that a couple of squirt notches on the rod face do extremely well rather than a hole as in stock rod. A hole could be a good place for a stress riser also.
