Jeff's story reminds me of a barner who posted a little while ago that his diamond B block was in for rebuild and when he went back to the workshop to check how it was going, they denied there had ever been such a block in there. Diamond B block lost.
I'd have kept a record of the number and reported it stolen, or at least told the workshop owner that I had and will but no questions will be asked if it is back here tomorrow. (Over here, before a car can be registered, the VIN and engine number are checked automatically against a list of all numbers reported stolen so an engine with a stolen number on it is worse than useless. If anybody tries to register it at any time, the Police want to know where it came from.)
