What rear end do the cars use? Just recently 3.54 gearsets for the 48-50 trucks that use the Dana 41 have become available. All said and done it's not a cheap alternative, unless you can set up the gears yourself, but it may be cheaper than finding an OD trans and all the bits and pieces. Of course, a good used modern axle is even cheaper.

Assuming that with whatever change you make (transmission, gear change or overdrive ) you get 15% better gas mileage.(and that's a stretch)
At 87¢ a gallon. Divide that into what you expect to pay for the modifications. That should give you the number of gallons that you would have to burn before you get to the break even point. Something to think about.
