You can take it in one piece, but you should just read the number on the lock cylinder and call A&L and they will cut you a new key. Then you can have any key cutter duplicate your blank to the new key.

I can post a picture of the number if you need it. What year is the popout? Is it the first style for the oval speedometer instrument panel, or it it the later style, with a steel plate crimped in place on the back of the cylinder? The later style is used with the round speedometer instrument panels.

Here's a picture showing the number (A1538) on the original popout used with the round speedometer.

For the popout used with the oval speedometer you have to look on the side of the cylinder.

Here's a picture of the popout used with the oval speedometer showing the number (A888) on the side. Notice that someone has used a 1930-1 key in it. I'll call A&L and have the correct key cut, and keep this key for a spare.

Best bet is to send it to "The Key Guy". He has been around the hobby for years and knows all about pop-outs and keys and can provide an original blank. His prices are reasonable and he is a nice fellow to do business with.

What are the odds the wire in the switch cable is good?

The wire usually wear though right were the cable bends on the engine. At least on all the ones I have had apart.
