Default Carb problems

After 3 years I finally drove my 1930 Briggs. Grant it I have nothing inside the car but a worn out seat. More body work needs done, but I did get a chance to drive it.
Here's my problem. I have a new Zen 1 Carb. The first 10 minutes the car drove pretty good. Then the back fire began. I adjusted the adjustment screw (with the cap) out 1 and 1/2 turns. I have to put vise grips on my choke rod inside the car to keep the choke on some. Not all the way. There is one spot that the car runs good. Can anybody tell me whats going on and how to fix it. Thanks for any help.
