Default Colorsanding and buffing

I have a question concerning polishing paint after colorsanding. I have done some polishing with a 7" variable speed electric polisher. The problem I have is getting the polishing compound flung all over the place. I have tried different ways like starting real slow and using my hand to spread the compound over the area to be polished. I still end up with the polishing compound flung all over the place and making a mess. There must be a trick that I am missing or maybe not (it is always messy). If anyone has a good method of minimizing the mess, please post what it is.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
