It could also be the speedometer. The old ones have a magnet shaft that turns inside of a drag cup. If the bearings wear too much, the magnet can start rubbing in the cup which will affect the needle that is attached to it.

Flex cables need to be lubed on occasion and many are neglected so they can start making noise as well. A person can remove the drive fron the trans housing and see if it turns smoothly. Also check gear condition.
