Default 47 Ford Flathead V8 surging in gear

Hey folks,

I think I finally licked all of the cooling issues for my flathead v8 in the old ford. I took her out for a drive and noticed a couple of things though:

When I am accelerating it feels like the car is "surging" in gear. As I rev a little higher it evens out, but I feel like I've gotta keep the revs pretty high or I lose power.

Any thoughts? Could this be a fuel pump thing? Timing issue?

When I let the car idle, or I rev the engine without being in gear I can't hear any misfires or anything. It just ticks along.
