Rebuilding my Flathead random questions

This is probably a dumb question but can the oil canister be located out of the way somewhere like on the firewall? Any requirements such as it needing to be up high so gravity can work to drain the oil from the bottom?

Also, are there different canisters? I have two and the paper element I bought is too big for the one I tried it in (the canister I prefer to use).
