Thanks for your concerns!
I am not running an open flame over the gas fill opening and like I mentioned I will most likely be pumping it full of exhaust. Believe you me, I wouldn't try it if I thought I would blow up! I don't want to deprive my wife and kids of my smiling face and cheery attitude.

It would probably be safer full of gas rather than empty. When I do my leaf burn piles I start them with a bean can half full of gas and the match has actually went out when I threw it in the can. However, spread that out on the pile and wait a couple minutes for the fumes to rise and then throw the match in the pile, then it is a big "whumpf" when it goes off. You stand back for that....
