Default Measuring timing gear lash

My Google Fu is weak this evening and I'm sure this has been covered on the barn before...

Does anyone have a photo, video or diagram showing the proper way to measure the lash in a timing gear?

I've head both feeler gauges and dial indicator, which is best?

If feeler gauges, I assume we're talking about the stick type vs. blade type... correct?
