Default new carb complications ,1951 F1 truck

Good morning. a complication with a new Carpenter carb.
my 51 truck runs well after an engine rebuild ,the problem I had was when pulling away the carb fluffs and sometimes stalls ,I fitted a new accelerator pump from a carb rebuild kit but still the same ,after stalling when pulling into a busy road I invested in a new carb from Carpenter ,my fault but I discovered the carb top has a ridge around it for air cleaner fit and I only had air cleaners with the straight top ,I had no option to take the carb top off my old carb (stamped ford USA 94) and fit it on the new body,it fits good and the top looks the same as the new one except the air cleaner fitting, when starting it just spins over with no attempt to fire up,the tube above the choke butterfly I assume should squirt gas when the accelerator is pushed but it doesn't ,this is not in my comfort zone so apologies if it appears a dumb question ,here in the U.K things like air cleaners are not always easy to find otherwise I would just get an alternative , any advice would be appreciated , thanks Jim.
