I just measured the center line to center line hole distance on my 1940 Ford DeLuxe coupe rear view mirror bracket and it's 2 and 1/4 in. The number cast into the mounting bracket of the mirror from my friend's 40 Standard coupe is 01A-17690-A. This bracket also has the 2 and 1/4 inch measurement and will fit my 40 DeLuxe. The mirror for that bracket is the same size and shape as the one in my DeLuxe. In the old BOB DRAKE catalog from the 70's he lists the bracket as part # 01A-17690-P. The "P" means Drake painted it brown. The chrome bracket he offered was part # 01A-17960-C. The part number for the painted mirror itself as sold by DRAKE back then was 68-17682-H. I looked in the
BIG GREEN BOOK and the 1938-41 Ford Chassis Parts Book and could not find a part number specifically for the 1940 Ford mirror or bracket. The photos in the old DRAKE catalog shows the 1940 mirror bracket to be a different size and shape than the 1935,36, 1937-39 brackets. However, DRAKE says in his catalog that the mirror head (#68-17682-H) does fit some 1935-36 passenger cars and that it fits all 1937-40 Passenger and 1935-47 pickups. PM me with your email address if you want some photos. I just found the DRAKE part number for the complete, painted brown, 1940 Ford closed car rear view mirror in his old catalog. It was 01A-17682. However, that number doesn't show up in the BIG GREEN BOOK or the Chassis Parts Book mentioned earlier. Last edited by 19Fordy; 06-03-2014 at 09:33 PM. |

It sounds as if you have the correct mirror. My guess is the windshield moldings are not installed correctly. When I install these, I pull the screws down at the end (vertical) first to make certain the molding(s) is firmly drawn in to the post.
