how to Remove the Pinion Gear from Housing

I need suggestions on how to Remove the Pinion Gear from Housing. I have tried lots of heat around the bearing area and have a small two ton jack inside the housing putting pressure on the pinion gear. It doesn't budge. I am open to serious ideas.

i usually try to do everything myself, but i draw the line with this kind of stuff. i don't even attempt it. i leave it to the pros.

why? ...because i'm likely to ruin something. and i have ample proof that! haha

I used my hydraulic press. I made a steel tube/sleeve that was just a bit bigger than the bearing OD on the flange side - and long enough to go past the splined end of the pinion.

I then used a thick piece of 1" steel plate (about 5" wide by 12" long). I insert the metal plate through the housing and used a socket to rest on the back of the pinion.

Then I placed this in the press (hanging it through the middle) and using my big tube on the flange side, put a plate on top of it, heated up the housing around the bearing and used the press to apply pressure to the rear of the pinion (sitting on the 1" plate and socket) and it easily came out.

Keep in mind that the housing has to fit down between both sides of the hydraulic press - such that the 1" plate picks up both sides of the press. Hopefully I'm making some sense here.

I pretty much did the same thing as what Bored Stroked did. I used the same press for 30-years at the phone company as a mechanic. When I retired, I lost my access to the company hydraulic press. I found and bought the same 1950 era vintage press (40 ton I think) we had at work. I don't use it very often at home, it's usually in my way, but it's life saver when I need it.

I do like Bored does, but don’t use heat. I’ve taken about a dozen apart in the last couple years, and never needed heat yet.

For my F3 Timken, which I believe is similar to the car differential pinion-wise, I used a 1/2” piece of plate ~5x5”, with a hole for the threaded pinion end, and two holes for all thread. Standard 1/2” hardware store all thread and 4 nuts, one welded to end of all thread above plate, one threaded up against bottom of plate. Plate goes over threaded end, and yoke nut firmly seated against plate. One wrench on welded nut, other turning lower nut, alternating side to side. I’ve removed two assemblies, one didnt require heat, one needed some encouragement with a weed burner. I did have a couple pieces of 1/4’” plate under the ends of the all thread where it engaged the housing to prevent marring. The stubborn pinion slightly bowed the 1/2” plate.

If I am off base in regards to being similar to the Timken, disregard.

Edit, may not have the threaded pinion end with torque tube.

Taking apart the center section:

First order of Business was to get the old pinion, bearings and race out. Using a 5/8” deep well socket I used to push up. And a 3 ½” piece of pipe with a cap of ¼ steel welded on top. I got some pressure on the press to hold everything in place and then I used the torch to put some heat into the housing. Not a lot of heat just got her warm. Not even close to cherry red. With some pumps of the handle the whole pinion assembly started moving and she was out. (One picture shows the pinion still in the case about ¾ of the way out) Clean case or rusty case I would suggest a little heat to get the pinion assembly out. As info I will be using all new bearings and a new gear set.

Yep, mine looks just like that pic, except I use a heavy wall piece of square tube to span the center. On my press the banjo housing fits between the beams, so it is very simple to set up. Only thing that might take a little work is finding the small circular bar of the correct size to push the pinion nose, but not hit the housings. I think it should be solid, not just a socket of the same diameter.

And again, mine have never required heat. I prefer not to heat things up if I don’t have to.
