52 Mercomatic

Could have swore I bought a new pan gasket and screen for the mercomatic in my 52. Several years ago. So far I have not been able to find it so maybe I never did buy one. I searched a bit here and elsewhere for the right part numbers and came up with 7A191 at C&G Ford but they don't have one. I recently drained the transmission oil. Just curious to see how it looked and it is as clean as the day I poured it into the transmission. Maybe I should just refill and drive it. It does leak though and the pan gasket is the most likely source. I have not tried Napa yet but might. Would be nice to have an original part number as they might not even have 1952 in their files.

You're likely right. Front seal or torque converter seal will throw oil all over and generally smoke on the exhaust. The pan gasket was 1P-77486-A in 1951 but I'm not sure about 52. They were basically the same unit through 1953 anyway.

Ok thanks for that. I will add that number to my list of possibilities as I contnue the search for the one I (think) I bought several years ago and put away in a "good place". Is it true that these transmissions have a screen instead of a replaceable filter?

The screen is 1P-77488-A 1950-53.

Most automatics just had a fine screen till the more modern era of the 60s. The cast iron cases held stuff together pretty well unless a driver got stuck in the mud. I've seen a lot of cracked Cruise-O-Matic cases. The 2-speed Ford-O-Matic for the Falcon cars was Ford's first aluminum case type. Slipping clutch plates generated the lions share of metal particles if they ever start to slip. They were bronze on steel plates in all those early Ford cars.

I have a copy of a 1953 Mercury manual and they do not mention a screen or filter. Just drain and change transmission oil at 15,000 miles. Thanks for the part number. I guess my first priority would be a new pan gasket if I do open it up to inspect the screen.

Yes, that is the type of answer I was hoping for. Somebody that has bought the parts and used them to prove they fit. Checked with my brother last night and he assures me that he remembers seeing the new gasket that I got for it. I know I never had the pan off so its just a matter of more searching to see where I've stored it and if it is the same as the one in your photos. Thanks very much for this info.

I found it. I was looking for a much smaller package than this one. Description on the label indicates it should fit my 52. Looks like it would fit several different transmission pans.

My pan. Your gasket looks to be more of a rectangle than mine. Mine appears to be more square. You might want to measure our pan first.

My fordomatic a terrible leak when I first acquired it. Research told me that I needed a cork gasket that looks exactly like yours, with the small dogleg on one sode. My mechanic said I also needed a new screen. 90% of the leak went away after he changed them. The rest is bad seals. Good luck. JPL

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear from another "omatic" user. I'm hoping the screen will be ok an just need cleaning at most as long as there is no damage. I can not see what holds that screen in place from the photos and I don't have mine apart yet.

Thanks again. I wondered if it might be something that simple. I see your transmission air intake has a wire mesh screen on it. Was that factory original? Mine has nothing on intake or exhaust side.

I would not use the steel screen in the picture. Do you see the rust pitting in the botton of the pan? What will happen when the screen rusts and falls apart?These transmissions get hot inside and when parked on a cold day they get condensation in side, this is why the use the brass screen filter. The brass filter can be cleaned with rubbing alcahol and blown out with compressed air. Tim
