I thought 3.14 day was the day that we install 3.14 ring and pinion sets?

I wonder how many kids today don't even know how to read a tape measure.

YES. Sorry. I had the numbers reversed.

It's 355/113.

Or a vernier scale? You can get great deals on used vernier calipers and micrometers, folks don't want them - too many decent dial and digital around these days. (I avoid digital because I often forget to take the battery out between uses, and when the battery overdepletes it destroys all the electronics...)

Back in the late 60's we were allowed to use calculators for homework but weren't allowed to bring calculators to tests in Engineering at Mizzou. We had to bring slide rules. Accuracy with a slide rule (as I recall) was three significant digits. Many students at that time didn't own calculators; they were pretty pricey. Today most phones will do everything a $300 calculator would do back then. And (if they still make them) a $4 calculator will also.

I'll shut up now. I've deviated from Model A talk way too much on here. This is an interesting thread, though.

About the only real advantage of having a digital measuring equipment is you can instantly switch from inches to metric and instantly get the exact conversion.

I don’t know what digital gauges you’re using but I’ve never had one be destroyed by a dead battery.

Not dead, but overly dead! When the battery overdepletes it sometimes swells, crusts up and exudes corrosive crap, which then gets all over the electronics. Unfortunately I've done this several times to various tools - at least one I remember was a Mitutoyo digital caliper, and another a Fluke IR temperature gun. Expensive, self inflicted wounds, to be sure, so I can't blame anyone but myself.
