what oil for columbia rear

when ordering parts today, i wanted oil for my 48 transmission and columbia rear. the order taker said that the trans oil they sell was not for a columbia rear, they didn't know what to use. what kind of oil should i use for the columbia and trans????

Rear axle can use any straight grade SAE 90 or SAE 140 GL-4 or GL-5 lubricant. They can also use any multi-viscosity lube. The transmissions use GL-4. SAE 90 in cooler climates and SAE 140 in warmer climates. Sta-lube GL-4 can be purchased from a local NAPA dealer in straight grades. You can also use it in the Columbia 2-speed axle.

I have 10 working Columbia's I use gear oil and molly grease. The gears will mix it like a blender. I use enough grease to make it about like honey. Several hundred thousand
miles in mostly warm weather, no problems. Marvel Mystery oil in the vacume shifter cylinder for smooth solid shifting. G.M.

g.m. how do I put m.m.o. in my vacume shifter ? had hard shifting the last 2 trips out. have had know problems in 12 years but I love that rear end. like your posts .reguards to you. dick t.

Remove both hoses, fill a small squeeze bottle with MMO, take an air hose and with only a few pounds of air blow in on of the cylinder tubes. The air will shift the cylinder away from the air, give the side you blew the air in a good shot of MMO. Blow air in the opposite tube then the MMO. Do this several times so the leather gets good and soaked. G.M.

Many people think GL-5 is not good for the Columbia. See July / August 2024 V-8 Times magazine page 105. Jim C.

140W, NAPA # SL 24238. There is a procedure to fill correctly. Fill to the Columbia filler plug, run for 10 min on jack stands with Columbia in overdrive, then refill to the Columbia fill plug.

John Connelly, who did a lot of work on my axle and furnished many of his parts for it, told me to use 90-140W gear lube, and said “there’s not enough bronze in a Columbia to worry about GL-5 issues”
